The Business Department at EPCHS is dedicated to providing students with the knowledge, tools, and resources needed to succeed in the workforce after graduation. Through a highly regarded work-based learning program, students have the opportunity to gain valuable hands-on experience and explore a wide range of career paths like welding, construction, manufacturing, CNA, teaching and more. Each year, the department looks forward to hosting the EPCHS Career Fair, which connects students with resources and opportunities to help shape their future goals. In addition, the department offers a monthly Lunch and Learn series, designed to enhance college and career readiness by introducing students to professionals from a variety of fields.

Michelle Lake is a part of the Business department and Work-Based Learning program at EPCHS. Originally from Lively Grove, Illinois, she graduated from Okawville High School before earning a bachelor’s degree from Southern Illinois University Carbondale and a master’s degree from Illinois State University. Michelle shared, “I love to help kids find the path for leaving here! It may be work, school, apprenticeships, a combo of all! I love taking kids on field trips and them returning and saying oh I learned this or I learned this. Walking into DQ and seeing it almost 100% staffed by EPCHS kids from our hiring event - was the best feeling a WBL Coordinator could get! I believe there are many paths after high school, each student has to find his or her own path. It may not be for five years, but during those five years, I hope they have a living wage job to support them while finding their career! My own son chose to enter the world of work after high school. I support all kids in any path they may choose.” Outside of work, she enjoys traveling, reading, and spending time with her HUGE extended family.

She shares, “I am a graduate of EPCHS, so I have a deep connection to the school. I care a lot about our students and want them to have a sense of belonging and connection to school. As a teacher, I also want them to succeed; the best part of my day is watching my students accomplish something they never thought they could.” Outside of work, she enjoys spending time with her husband Jeff, daughter Paige, and son Brett. She also enjoys cooking, traveling, and spending time with her extended family and friends.
